Walls that work as hard as they look good

Retaining walls
Hold back a slope, stop erosion and turn an unusable hill into flat, usable yard.

Seat walls
Built-in seating around your patio or fire pit that also frames the space.

Raised patio walls
Build a level patio on a sloped lot, with steps leading up or down.

Commercial walls
Clean, durable walls for parking lots, entrances and landscaped beds.
What's behind the wall matters most
A retaining wall holds back tons of soil, and water makes that soil even heavier. Walls that lean, bulge or crack usually fail because of what was skipped behind them. That's why every retaining wall we build is structurally installed with a full drainage system.
- 1Separation fabric
Lines the excavation and keeps soil from washing into the drainage stone, so the drainage keeps working for years.
- 2Perforated drain pipe
Runs along the base of the wall to collect water and carry it away before pressure can build up.
- 3Drain stone
Clean stone backfill behind the block lets water flow freely down to the pipe instead of pushing on the wall.

Common questions
Have a question we didn't answer? Call (860) 837-0909 or email sales@avexmasonry.com.
Does a retaining wall need drainage?
Yes. Water that builds up behind a wall pushes on it and is one of the main reasons walls lean, bulge or fail. We install separation fabric, perforated drain pipe and drain stone behind our retaining walls so water has a way out.
What's the difference between a retaining wall and a seat wall?
A retaining wall holds back soil, like on a slope or around a raised patio. A seat wall is a lower, freestanding wall built at sitting height, usually around a patio or fire pit, to add built-in seating.
How much does a retaining wall cost?
It depends on the length and height of the wall, the block or stone you choose, the drainage needed and site access. We meet you at your property, take measurements and send a detailed written proposal at no cost, so there are no last-minute surprises or change orders.
Do tall retaining walls need a permit?
Rules depend on your town. Taller walls may need a permit or an engineered design. We'll go over what your project needs during your estimate.
Do you build retaining walls for commercial properties?
Yes. Along with homes, we've built retaining walls for commercial properties.
What areas do you build retaining walls in?
We build retaining walls across Hartford County, CT, plus parts of New Haven County and Tolland County. See the full list of towns below.
